Cameron Norrie earned the most important success of his career by coming back from a set down to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

"Returning from a physical setback last year, I fell in the first round of qualies here. I just aimed to appreciate my tennis in the latter part of the year. To secure a victory like this, it's the most significant win of my tennis journey, my initial victory over the global number one and probably the strongest competitor in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, seeded 31st globally, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme run of nine consecutive finals and 17 consecutive Masters 1000 victories, which was the top run of results in the young champion's early career.

The top seed looked to be advancing smoothly to success early on as he sailed past the first set. Yet, the British contender slowly battled back into contention by executing with sharper placement and dragging the Spaniard into lengthy, physical points. His persistent consistency and reliability gradually left its mark.

The 22-year-old appeared especially struggling striking his signature shot, which has been the best shot in the world for much of this season, committing 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 errors.
