In a recent appearance, star Jude Law remarked he had no concerns about backlash for playing Vladimir Putin in a new film. This production, however, may align too neatly with the mythologized image circulated by official channels that, within Russia, it functions as a endorsement instead of a challenge.

The Manufactured Strongman

For years, the Kremlin and the country's entertainment industry have collaborated to forge a made-to-measure persona of Putin. This character is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a television show released last fall, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “save” Russia from disorder. Although the character's name a different name, the message is clear: the hero must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals often end up buttressing this same narrative rather than debunking it. An adaptation based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the leader's mythology by framing him as a symptom but as a symptom, moving the focus to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, the president is shown as having been picked by influential figures to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking permanent power.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. Historically, these events ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody ever begged him to take the job. The position was effectively a casting call with many candidates. Central to this process stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the country de facto.

• Per an expert who studied Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate merely met the required parameters: obedient, from the security services, and politically neutral.

Interestingly, the shift to framing him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond. The grittier interpretation led Russian media and social media to draw visual parallels with Putin. Mashup posters replacing the actor's likeness with his surfaced on city centers, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the authorities will not miss the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's omission of mass protests, the opposition, or prominent activists from its narrative, even though it includes recent years, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

Domestically, Putin is frequently an all-powerful presence who never appears on screen. He is hinted at through photographs or orders from on high. Now, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently validate the very myths it might seek to question.
